- Maintain clearance around all heaters including wood stoves.
- Wood stove? Burn only dry wood; burn hot first 5 minutes, then damp down; ensure stove pipe cleaned annually; dispose of ashes in metal container – can stay hot for 3 days.
- Always keep candles and incense on plates.
- Outlets not overloaded with cords & no cords under rugs or chairs.
- Turn pot handles inward, so that kids (and adults) don’t accidentally grab or bump them - and maintain a 3 foot “hot zone” around the stove.
- Double-check that stove knobs are turned off when you leave, and never leave food on the stove unattended.
- Have smoke detectors in place and operational each floor and bedroom; change the batteries when you change your clocks in the fall.
- Carbon monoxide detector on ground floor.
- Fire extinguisher mounted and visible by front door and vehicles. Monthly check the gauge (in the green) and hold upside down for 15 seconds.
- Each room has two ways out; upstairs bedrooms have emergency escape ladders as needed.
- Household escape plan and meeting place discussed and practiced.
- If smoke detectors go off at night stay low and go… close doors to room with fire to contain smoke and fire! Dial 911.
- Maintain 5 foot of clear space around your home of all lumber, debris, furniture, tarps, storage, and branches - minimize the chance of fire brands from a wildfire starting a fire that affects your home!
- Keep a red garden hose hooked up, with brass nozzle - know how to use it in case of a fire.
- Contact your local fire department with any questions.
